Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Mi Oya' is yet another beautiful C. wendtii variant with red-brown, slightly bullate foliage. It is found only in the river 'Mi Oya' of Sri Lanka where it reputedly grows in very warm waters. Tropica was the first to collect this variant and distribute it commercially. Nonetheless, it is still considered among one of the less common C. wendtii varieties.

The culture of this Cryptocoryne is simple and unproblematic. Although a rich substrate will increase growth rates and size, inert sand or gravel will suffice for satisfactory growth. Lighting is an important factor in determining the growth behavior of this variety. A bright, open location will usually cause C. wendtii 'Mi Oya' to spread its leaves horizontally while a shaded location will encourage a more vertical growth characteristic. This variety, as with others within this highly variable species, is an excellent candidate for non-CO2 injected aquaria. Unlike many other Cryptocoryne spp., the wendtii group is not very prone to melting.

Emersed culture is simple. An inert or rich substrate medium can be used coupled with high humidity levels. This variety adapts quickly and easily from submersed growth to emersed. Propagation is also unproblematic. Under both emersed and submersed conditions, C. wendtii 'Mi Oya' will produce a profusion of daughter plants after a period of acclimatization.

As one of the largest members of the wendtii group, C. wendtii 'Mi Oya' is most appropriate for the midground of a large aquascape where it can add interest, color, and texture.
