Default PPS and water changes

Don't know if this is the correct forum for this, I apologize if it isn't.

I've been browsing the PPS threads and see that one approach is without frequent (ie weekly) water changes.

Can I ask how many people do this system without water changes? Is it successful without?

I'm asking because I am trying to get my father who is near retiring into the aquarium/planted tank hobby. I have a 75 gallon out our office and he seems to enjoy the tank quite a bit, however every time I pull out the python it puts him off saying "that's too much work."

If I can get a nice, automated system set up which wouldn't require water changes frequently (I think he would enjoy testing parameters from time to time) I can get him hooked.

Thanks!

Pruning, planting, fertilizing, algae... too much work too.

Hi
Planted aquariums are not easy. A lot of work is involved. What if you show him the PPS articles and let him decide.

My personal recommendation for beginners is PPS with water changes. It is the best method eliminating most of the problems people had in the past with other systems.

The table tells you how to make the fertilizer and how much to dose. No testing required.

Thank you for asking

Why not do a Walstad-type natural planted tank?

I have several set up and only do partial water changes a couple of times a year. The rest of the time it's just top them off when they need it, pull/prune plants and clean the foam prefilter on the powerhead. Well, and feed the fish. Here's my 125.
