Default How to mix ferts in 32 oz container?

Hello,

I bought these nifty twin neck containers to easily and quickly measure my ferts. I thought my purchase was pretty nifty. But now I see that 1liter is 33.8oz and these containers are 32oz. The measuring chamber has ml marks on it and I will be dosing 11-12 ml for my 120g. So it is easy to be accurate once I have mixed my ferts. But how should I mix the ferts?

Do I need to do some fancy calculations to determine what percentage 32 is of 33.8 and then reduce my fert grams by that percentage and then still dose 11-12ml?

Do I find some other container to mix my ferts in 1 liter, pour 32oz of that one liter into my nifty twin neck container and just throw out the additional 1.8 oz of mix (and still dose 11-12ml)?

Or do I do some other math calculations, mix as though my container is 1 liter and then dose less?

Hi vonjager,

First of all, welcome to APC! I see this is your first post. There is lots of great information here and friendly people to help if you need it. BTW, my wife and I grew up in St. Louis, miss the great food on "The Hill" and Drew's Frozen Custard!

To get the an equivalent concentration in your 32 ounce container that you wanted in a 1 liter container multiply the grams you would have used in the one liter container by 0.95 and add it to your quart container.

Roy,

Thank you. I did the math and then I found the PPS Pro recipe calculator. Indeed the numbers match or are very close. I assume that this takes into account that once the dry ferts are put into the bottle there won't actually be room for 32oz of distilled water?

Don't forget steaks at Mike Shannon's in downtown!

Hi vonjager,

Yes, and the 0.95 was a very close approximation. Keep in mind that it does not have to be precise but it is a good idea that each batch mixed is consistent with the next. I use distilled water to minimize fungus growth. In addition, I only mix up 2 - 4 weeks mix at a time. Also I add a couple drops of fungus treatment to my ferts to inhibit fungus growth; especially in my trace elements (CSM+B).

Roy,

So if I have a 120gal, I will be dosing 11-12ml per day which translates into 86 doses from my 32oz container. So I should really only be filling it maybe 1/4 full. That makes it difficult to be precise. I wonder why I read to use a 1 liter bottle for your ferts?

What fungicide do you use? Can I just pick up some fungicide fish meds from the lfs or is there an even cheaper way? You don't eventually need to remove the fungicide from your aquarium with activated carbon?

I imagine that it is even harder to keep the solution fresh with some of the autodosing techniques that require the solution to be much more dilute?

Thanks for your input!

Roy,

When were you last in St. Louis? You know downtown has been revitalized and is beautiful now!
