There are actually three worthwhile tests for nitrogen.

Ammonia and nitrite are biproducts from fish waste, and can be toxic to your fish. It is important to test for these, especially in newly established tanks to make sure the water is safe for your fish.

Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle (ammonia is converted to nitrite and nitrite is converted to nitrate by bacteria). Nitrate is less toxic to fish than the other two forms. Nitrate is often added to planted tanks to fertilize the plants. A level of about 25 ppm is beneficial to plants and safe for most fish.

I hope this is helpful.

Nitrate is more beneficial for plants and Nitrite will be broken down by bacteria to form Nitrate so you should be testing for Nitrate.
