I've heard of the freezing trick before, but never used it. Seems pretty clever, though. Not sure I would try it with soil. If it's a small tank, I would just tear it down and go from scratch. Actually, that's what I did do.

I use 2 pounds of unwashed EW castings under my flourite/peagravel mix (60-40). Works great. Maybe 3.5-4inches in back of tank. The castings were only put on the back half of the bottom pane because i didn't want to have to keep my foreground with more than 2 inches. Fact of the matter is my tank is growing very well now and i would not hesitate to do it again at a later date.

where does one buy ew castings? i went to walmart, home depot, lowe's....don't see it....

Google search. Most only sell wholesale but some sell to the public. I cant remember where i got it from but its not hard to find really on the internet.
