Default Questions about Purigen

I have read wonderful things about Purigen and I have decided to try it out. There are some questions I have about Purigen.

Will AP's StressCoat prevent the regeneration of Purigen?

I understand thet Purigen is not a biological filter media. If so which part of the canister filter should I put Purigen? B4 the biological media, for example Matrix or at the last stage b4 the fine filter wool?

Will purigen affect blackwater conditions? Cos i use peat filtration as well.

Thanks

purigen takes out tanins. So I really would not use it in a blackwater set-up. Think of it like this...You add peat to get tanins then add purigen which will take them out...So why add peat in the first place?
Not trying to sound like a riddle, but I hope you get the idea.
Purigen is a great media...However I don't think it is right for your situation
It also removes nitrates so you know.

Fishmaster, I don't believe that Purgien removes nitrate. It removes waste that will eventually turn into nitrate. So if your adding nitrate to you tank directly, Purgien will not remove it.

This is best answered by SeaChem, please refrain from answering posts in sponsors forums unless you 150% sure of your reply.

They have answered your first question on their website, specifically on Purigen's FAQ page.

As to your second question, definately after your biological media since it is considered 'chemical filtiration' and that normally comes after 'biological filtiration'.

I'm not sure on it's affects on peat, but it's supposed to be more effective than carbon so it might have an affect or maybe it's a selective resin. Hopefully our sponsor will clarify soon.

Purigen will impact the black water effect you are looking for. Purigen also has the ability to directly remove ammonia and nitrate, however this is greatly dwarfed by it's ability to scavenge nitrogenous organic material before breaking down into nitrate. Regarding the regeneration of this resin, we recommend using a water conditioner/dechlorinator that does not contain amine based polymers (like our Prime) to neutralize the bleach. If you do use one containing amine based polymers in this step of the regeneration process, the amine in the dechlorinator will associate with the chlorine bleach on the resin to form chloramine. The end result will be a chloramine contaminated product that should not be introduced back into the aquarium. However, it is possible to use water conditioners/dechlorinators that contain amine based polymers directly in an aquarium containing Purigen. After using such a water conditioner in the aquarium, I suggest waiting a few days to make sure it is completely degraded before deciding to regenerate Purigen. Or you can use our Prime or StressGuard (no amine based polymers) to avoid any confusion. Hope this helps.

Since purigen has an effect on black water, i guess it is not suitable for my tank. Thanks for the quick response.
