The Bag is very sturdy and does well during regeneration. It does not normally tear with regular handling. Glad you stopped using the scissors Salt : ) and thank you for the post. Purigen has a charge and is macroporous. This allows it to pull out large chained molecules and have a preference for nitrogenous waste. I believe I have sent John S a message.

The directions indicate to recharge you first soak in bleach solution, dechlorinate it and then soak in buffer solution. Why is the buffer solution required?

Purigen should be buffered for fresh water tanks because the bleach has a
very high pH and the buffer is added to ensure the tank pH is not effected by bleach's high pH.

I am lost on the buffer after regeneration. Wouldn't a soak in fresh water with a ample amount of prime added take care of this. If not how about after using the prime step simply soaking it in some water from the tank that the purigen is used in? Would that not buffer it?

I am curious because I just purchased two seachem's THE BAG and 500ml of purigen to try out. I will be trying this out in two tanks. One is an established 30gal and the other will be a newly setup 10gal with new ada aquasoil. Both running Eheims 2126 and 2213 respectively.

How much purigen does one usually add to a filter?

Thanks,
riverrat

Bleach has a very high pH and Prime does not impact pH. Prime will impact the chlorine or chlorine derivatives formed from the bleach. When you add Purigen back to the tank, soaking it in a buffered solution ensures that pH will not be effected.

Since the systems, are small you can use 1/4 cup and that will be plenty to filter your tank.

What is the bead size of purigen? I use small internal filters on several tanks and "the Bag" would probably fill the filter without any Purigen in it. I would like to try it but would have to come up with a containment system to fit my filters.

Thanks
Brian
