Default Purigen!

This stuff is incredible! If you are having any tannin/discoloration/cloudiness that won't clear, etc.-- this product will fix it! I am very impressed with the results on several ADG tanks we have used Purigen on. Seachem's "The Bag" is a must as well. Exceptional.

Yep, it's a sight to behold... usually a day or two after putting it in the filters, the water gets so clear it looks like there's no water in the tank.

This stuff doesn't remove any of the stuff plants need? I thought I read somewhere that it would remove something.. micronutrients.. not sure but definitely have seen someone recommending against its use but if Jeff says it's okay then it must be!

I was thinking of trying out Seachem Clarity, too.

Edit: I went back to Seachem's website to read the description of the product:

Purigen™ controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds.

So, I take it then that it wouldn't have any impact on our inorganic nutrients that we dose? Sounds cool, I think I'll try it!

I've been using Purigen 100 ml bag continuously on my tank for a couple of months now. Clarity is excellent.

I only have two grumbles that may or may not be linked to Purigen:

1. The purigen turns brown and needs re-charging about every two weeks! and my 'The Bag' broke at the seam...
2. In addition, despite dosing high amounts of ferts, I have plants that are showing deficiencies. Seachem does not claim specifically to know the mechanism that removes waste. What could the purigen be removing?

It is removing something since it turns brown so quickly. I feed incredibly sparingly - often a small pinch every two or 3 days to a small group of pencil fish. So I don't have very much nitrogenous waste.

BTW, tank is 36 gal Greg Watson/Seachem ferts. (I've been dosing x2 on micros and Iron.)

I just took out the Purigen yesterday to experiment on what happens. Only thing so far is that the tank is not nearly as clear as it was before!

Anyways, anyone have any ideas or more information?

Thanks,

ERiK

Just read Purigen info from here: Purigen link

Quote:
Purigen’s™ impact on trace elements is minimal.
Minimal, but could this account for my Purigen turning brown so quickly?

Purigen will not impact the trace elements or the fertilizers you are adding. Purigen will focus on organic waste removal. Do you have drift wood or peat in your tank? Purigen will absorb tannins or other color bodies from the water from the water.
The Bag breaking at the seam is not a normal occurrence. If you PM your information I will get another one sent to you.

Hmmmm I man handle mine when it comes to cleaning and never had a problem.....maybe I should be more careful now.

I use the stuff in my 6ft tanks jammed packed with tang.cichlids and it does wonders for those guys! I just bought a new bag yesterday to use in my ADA tank.

I used to have a problem with some of the bags breaking, but I realized it was because I was cutting the plastic bags open with scissors. Even though I thought I was cutting very carefully and not hitting the purigen mesh bag, I must have been anyway. I stopped using scissors and just rip the plastic open with my hands now. Never had a mesh bag break since.

Just adding this in addition to the replies posted above...

Physico-chemical forces (tiny electric charges) trap the particles. This can be roughly explained by using two magnets - the "+" charged side of one of the magnets attracts the "-" charged side of the other. But two "+" sides push each other away.
Iron for example is charged "+" (Fe2+ or even Fe3+) and if the Purigen beads are charged "+" iron will not be attracted.

The resin (Purigen) is engineered and made in such a way that the physico-chemical forces attract and "keep" only particles with certain electric charges. Resins can be "recharged" because of that - by mixing the resin with some chemical that pulls stronger the same particles that the resin absorbs.
