When I use aquarium salt and baking soda and Epsom Salts according to the directions for hatching Brine Shrimp by Gary Lange and Mike Helleg in the Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine I get very good results. I have learned how important it is to have a steady temperature that changes very slowly to have a good hatch.
I am not a chemist and it has been 20+ years since college so be patient with me. I DO NOT know my salts.
Aquarium Salt I think has sodium in it. Therefore NaCl. Sodium Chloride maybe.
Baking Soda has Sodium Bicarbonate = Na SOMETHING.
Epsom Salts has some complex chemical shorthand to it, but it has Magnesium in it.
These ingredients and following directions give a good hatch.
If I use ReefSalt which I believe have all the same ingredients in it; the results are not the same.
Why?
My water change is about 2 cups per day for my 20 Gallon Tank.
Hatching Brine Shrimp gives me about 2-3 cups (750 mL) of water with brine shrimp in it.
I was trying to be efficient using the ReefSalt instead of Aquarium Salt, Baking Soda and Magnesium.
Why the difference? (I still like and use your products. I am just trying to learn my salts.
