Very interesting.. another question would be does it effect beneficial bacteria when the tank is just starting to cycle.. would it be a good idea to kill the lights until the tank is cycles?

Typically nitrifying aerobic bacteria 'cling' to a surface.

Having the lights on should not affect the cycling process.

Actually from what I've read UV sterilizers will kill the nitrifying bacteria in the water before the bacteria attaches itself onto the surface of your aquarium. this is why some products that help aquarium tanks cycle suggest users to turn off their UV lights 24 hours after use so the bacteria could attach itself to a surface. UV sterilizers will slow down the cycling process because it will kill most if not all the bacteria in the water before it can even attach to something.

I apologize for any confusion; I believe I misunderstood the question Here is a quote from our Stability FAQ web page (http://www.seachem.com/support/FAQs/Stability.html) that may help to clarify things:

"Q: I'm currently using Prime & Stability together for my weeky water changes, but on the bottle of Stability it says not to run UV. After dosing with Stability how long do I need to wait before I can safely switch back to UV?

A: The UV and/or ozone should be kept off for the 7 days you are dosing if you are cycling or for about 24 hours if it is for Stability additions of new fish or water changes. The reason both should be turned off is because UV and ozone break down and kill bacteria.

Q: What is a reasonable amount of time to allow the Stability to come out of the spore state and find a home to attach themselves?

A: The bacteria should be able to find a suitable home within 24 hours."

We hope this information helps; sorry again for any confusion!
