Default Purigen, acetone aroma after recharge

I have been using purigen for a fairly short time and have been quite pleased with it. I finally got around to recharging the batch in one of my discus tanks yesterday and have noticed a very strong smell of acetone from the purigen after the bleach soak. I do not use any sort of water conditioner in the tank during water changes and the tank is primarily filled with RO water at each water change. The acetone scent has diminished somewhat with numerous fresh water rinses but is still strong enough to smell easily. Any thoughts??

We are glad to hear that you have been pleased with Purigen's performance! It is very common to get a strong smell off of the Purigen after soaking it in bleach for the regeneration process. Typically, it would have more of a chlorine odor, but it can differ somewhat. After soaking the Purigen in bleach, did you then soak it in Prime (or another dechlorinator)? Doing so should get rid of the odor, as well as making the resin safe to put back in your tank. Since you are keeping discus in a freshwater tank, you will also want to soak your Purigen in some buffer to lower the pH to closer to that of where your tank is sitting (bleach has a very high pH). Hope this information helps.

Many thanks for the info. it has been soaked in the prime at this point and still smells strongly of acetone. I have not as of this point done the buffer soak but shall do so later today when i get home.
