Default Surface Scum Reducer?

Will using purigen help to reduce "surface scum" in planted tanks? It says it removes proteins, and I'm not sure how to make a surface skimmer for my aquatech powerfilters. Using a powerhead creates too much current in my tank as well...

When I was running Purigen it didn't help with surface scum.
Have you considered adding mollies?

Purigen or our Matrix Carbon will help to remove organic material from the surface as long as you can filter the surface water through these medias. There are different "surface skimmers" sold that can be fitted to just about any filter intake tube. This will allow you to pull water directly from the surface straight into the filter where these medias are kept. You can also dab the surface of your aquarium water with a fine mesh containing some carbon or even a paper towel. These will help to a degree.

What is the actual cause of this "scum". I have two 24 gal JBJ Nanos and 1 has it and the other does not.

Thanks Roy

It is excess proteins that gather at the top of the tank. As Gumby mentioned there are a few fish who will eat the surface scum. Mollies are one of them.

What causes the "excess protien" in a fishless tank?
