Tricky....don't let too much light get blocked out, or your hairgrass will suffer!!

I would plant the HC now so it can spread and start sucking up nutrients away from the hair algae. Have you tried treating the algae with hydrogen peroxide yet? That will kill it and leave your plants unharmed if you don't "overdo" it!
