Before posting I thought about the fact that nearly all the research on photosynthesis seems to have done with an emphasis on terrestrial plants. However many of our aquatic plants have terrestrial cousins, so it seems likely that many of them retained their original method of photosynthesis rather than all of them inventing a new method while also undergoing adaptations to an aquatic environment. It would be simpler to keep it the same, unless there were some barrier to conventional photosynthesis.

Your revised experiment sounds useful. There would be information an aquatic plant enthusiast could check against.
