sort of sounds like what happened to my m.filigree in my 10 gallon a while ago. the stems blackened mid stem and broke off and rotted away. other plants started getting really small growth and one by one all my stems started blackening and dying.

anyways, I put flourish root tabs in and the plants are looking healthier now. however, I'm getting green water now
