Are you running CO2 or just using the organics in the substrate, and what is your lighting (type and wattage) intensity? If it's a low-light setup with natural CO2 production I suggest letting the fern be your main plant with something like Fissidens moss or maybe some Anubias 'nana-petite' to go with it.
