Purigen will impact the black water effect you are looking for. Purigen also has the ability to directly remove ammonia and nitrate, however this is greatly dwarfed by it's ability to scavenge nitrogenous organic material before breaking down into nitrate. Regarding the regeneration of this resin, we recommend using a water conditioner/dechlorinator that does not contain amine based polymers (like our Prime) to neutralize the bleach. If you do use one containing amine based polymers in this step of the regeneration process, the amine in the dechlorinator will associate with the chlorine bleach on the resin to form chloramine. The end result will be a chloramine contaminated product that should not be introduced back into the aquarium. However, it is possible to use water conditioners/dechlorinators that contain amine based polymers directly in an aquarium containing Purigen. After using such a water conditioner in the aquarium, I suggest waiting a few days to make sure it is completely degraded before deciding to regenerate Purigen. Or you can use our Prime or StressGuard (no amine based polymers) to avoid any confusion. Hope this helps. |
