I'm thinking about breeding & selling snowball shrimp. I got some from someone on these boards; I'd also like to get some fresh blood that hasn't made the rounds on these forums yet. Any ideas where to look?

There is no need to get "fresh blood" for Snowball, RCS, yellow, or even Blue Pearl shrimps. I have bred Snowball shrimps for at least 5 to 8 generations, and they still look the same. The same follows for all Neocaridina species. Whoever comes up with this idea just wanted people to buy different varieties.

In addition, if you buy "fresh blood" from other hobbyists (if you already have established pure colonies of that species), you actually run the risk of buying shrimps that have been mixed with other species to ruin the pure form of your own shrimps.

I want to introduce new DNA to keep my population genetically robust. Brothers and sisters inbreeding with each other will produce stock without as much genetic variation as a more mixed population, reducing the population's ability to adapt to new environmental conditions. I want to provide the healthiest possible stock to make sure my shrimp have the best chance in whatever aquarium conditions my potential buyers happen to have.

This thread is not a discussion of population genetics. I am only looking for a source of shrimp not likely to be related to those on these boards.

If you know how to find such a source, please let me know! Thank you!

I believe snowballs come from Germany, probably the same source. No need for new DNA. There is not data to prove you will have more robust shrimp if you add from different people.

It could hurt if the person you are getting them doesn't a a pure strain....or a strain with as strong of colors.
