Default February 2004's Tank of the Month is ...ekim!

I'd like to congratulate ekim who has been chosen to be the first Tank of the Month at Aquatic Plant Central.

I have had aquariums on and off over the past 20 years but never really ventured into aquatic plants until about 4 years ago. Since getting into aquatic plants I can never seem to have enough tanks! There is always more layouts or aquascapes and different plant species I want to try!

Internet forums such as this one have greatly improved my overall knowledge in this hobby, from growing great looking plants and algae free tanks to helping perfect my aquascaping.

Design Concept

For this tank I was going for the "mound" aquascape, with branchy driftwood. I wanted it to look a little wild/natural looking. I don't feel I have totally gotten the wild / natural look just yet thought!

Tank Specs
  • size - 20 gallon, 24" x 12" x 16"
    lighting - 2 x T12 24" bulbs overdriven 2X, K6500 and K3000
    filtration - Fluval 204 canister
substrate - stone dust or paver-base
plants - Ranalisma rostrata, Glossostigma elatinoides, Hemianthus micranthemoides, Vesicularia dubyana,
Bolbitis heudelotii, Cryptocoryne wendtii?, Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae, Ammania gracilis.
fish - Hemigrammus bleheri, Otocinclus affinis, Apistogramma cacatuoides, Ancistrus sp.
fertilizer regimen- KNO3, K2SO4, KH2PO4, CaCl and Seachems flourish added ever second day.
CO2 - pressurized system 5lb tank (collected all pieces separately & locally) & DIY reactor

Advice for the new comer to the hobby

You don't need to spend much money on the substrate, size is most important (1-6mm). Any inert gravel will work fine, no need for all the fancy flourite & ecco. If you can, seed your tank with mulm from another tank before you add your substrate. Spend your money on a pressurized CO2 system.

To discuss ekim's tank please go to the Tank of the Month forum!
