A chatroom is a great way for people to get quick suggestions and answers to urgent problems, disease, etc.

This is starting to look like the upcoming presidential race.

Not to insult you Art, but why is the chatroom so outdated? I would suggest you borrow ideas from the cichlid-forum chatroom...

Raul,

Thanks! The chat system that cichlid-forum uses is phpopenchat. It is a very good system but I have a few problems with it.

First, most of the install docs are in German as is the code. I don't read German.

Second, it requires the use of a second database on the mysql server. This is easy for cichlid-forum as they have a dedicated server. We are on a host (at least until we get big enough ).

Thirdly, it doesn't integrate into phpBB2 very well, yet. Cichlid-forum's website is highly customized so the integration of phpopenchat is more easily done. We rely on phpBB2 for our design. Any add ons have to integrate with that source code. Again, until I have enough time to "re-do" the site.

The above notwithstanding, I am in contact with the phpopenchat folks to see what can be done.

Where is everyone? Every time I log on I check the chat room, and nobody is ever there! There should be a way to check how many people are in chat, maybe from the home page or something.

Not trying to discourage chat rooms...but I feel there is really no need for it. IT would be nice to have (that's for sure), but maybe a waste of resources. We would only know if we tried it out.

Default Chat Room

Once we get a working chat room, It can work like this:

You log on and look to see who else is logged on. If you want to talk to one of them you send him or her a quick personal message: "meet me in the chat room." Log in there and wait for the other person to show up. You can, of course send personal messages to members not currently logged in to meet in the chat room at a future time.
