Default First Iwagumi Style Aquarium (12g)

Hey Everybody!

This is my first post at APC and I want to share my newly setup 12g Iwagumi tank. I've had planted aquariums for about 7 years but this is my first try at a nature aquarium. The tank pictured is only three days old. Let me know what you think!

Here are the details:

Tank

12 gallon MrAqua (cheap ADA) bowfront tank
Zoo Med 501 Canister Filter
One 12lb bag ActivFlora substrate mixed with Flourite Black for bottom substrate
ADA Amazonia Powder for top substrate layer
Red Sea Drop Checker
Coralife 2x55w 6400K Bulbs (only one kept on)
Milwaukee Instruments CO2 Regulator

Plants

Hemianthus micranthemoides (pearl grass) (i planted each stem individually from a huge bush i grew in my old tank

Rotala sp. 'Nanjenshan' ( I bought this from the Aqua Forest Aquarium store in San Francisco. I live in the bay area and lucky to live close by to an ADA store)

(There is a third plant located near the buddha stone (the big one). Can anybody tell me what it is?)

Stone

Seiryu Store - purchased at AFA store in SF

Fish

Chinese White Clouds
Kuhli Loaches ( ~13 years old each!!!!!!)
Siamese Algae Eaters
African Dwarf Frog

-----------------------------------------------

This is my first aquarium using ADA Amazonia substrate. I know it precipitates excess Ammonia into the water column for the first couple weeks, so I've been doing a 50% water change every two days. The water, however, still seems to be pretty murky. Will this go away soon?

if you know that it leaches ammonia and is only 3 days old, why do you have fish in there?

The tank has aged water from my old tank and the filter media is already populated with bacteria from my old filter as well. According to my seachem ammonia test, the ammonia never reaches above 0.03ppm, probably because im doing 50% WC every two days.

But yes, i really shouldn't have fish in there right now. The only reason i do is because i dont have another place to put them for the time being..

Stay on your water changes and keep us posted on the progress, Great start. Are you disturbing the substrate with the water changes? This could cause murkiness, have you tried purigen?
