Default DIY UV sterilizer

I was thinking of making an inline UV sterilizer. Design wise, it'll be like an inline heater with PVC parts and such.

I'll use a 4 pin, T5 UV bulb. My question is, do you think a quartz sleeve for the bulb is necessary? The bulb glass is enough?

I was worried about UV's effect on PVC. Looks like a simple coat of latex paint can block UV.

Not sure how latex is durable against 24/7 water though! And painting inside a long tube would be a pain. I guess a spray plastic paint should work (non oil based).

Are you doing this for the fun involved, or to save money? Intuitively I doubt you will save a lot of $$, but it could be very entertaining to figure out how to do it. Before I would try to comment on your questions I would want to do a lot of research.

For fun but could be potentially money saving. As you move up the UV wattage the price goes up exponentially.

I've also seen people using UV LED place around an acrylic chamber. That's pretty cheap compared to traditional bulbs. It looks like it's good for killing algae spores and floating algae which I'm after. Acrylic allows most of the UV to move through unlike glass.

Now that I'm thinking about it. The LED route could be fun.
