hi all, i have 3 questions:

1. does anyone use a uv sterilizer

2. do you leave it running, or only run it some?

3. in an hob filter, what media should i use? because it has been brought to my attention that most people that keep plants don't use carbon.

I use a uv sterilizer and it runs 24/7/365. It is always recommended to run them all the time. If you don't want to use carbon, just don't put anything in the filter bag (if it is a bag).

Russel ...the activated carbon in filters are porous in nature...they are designed to absorb pollutants and chemicals but they can also absorb chemicals you need...

in a planted tank it can leech some of your trace elements...that you need...

so with that being said...run your filter with out it....

hope this helps...
