i bought the ahsupply 96 watt kit. it fit into my old hood, with the exception of the ballast which i mounted on the back. my question is, do you guys think it will penitrate through a sheet of double strength glass placed on top of the tank as a hood? and also i have the white film at the top of the tank, will it get through that fine? it looks fine to me, but i was just wandering.

I don't think the glass will be a problem but I would get rid of the white scum on top of the water. Mollies will eat it. You can use paper towels to soak up some but the best way I have found is to make a surface skimmer. Just take a one inch piece of plastic pipe and drill a 1/2 inch hole in the side. Then rig up a hose from the bottom. By making a U shape you can siphon off the surface scum. It might take a few nights but it works . That's what I do.

A protien skimmer would be overkill, its mainly used in reef systems to remove dissolved orgranic compounds using foam fractionation, since the organic matter from dying corals, polyps etc cannot be removed easily. The surface scum isnt something that will dissolve easily, so you can pretty much just soak it out with towels, or as Hawk suggested just make a simple surface simmer. I think coralife or fluval or eheim makes an attachment for an external cannister that can remove the surface scum, but I dont think you need to invest in a protien skimmer.
