Default First planted tank! Worried about the soil depth

Hello! So this is my first foray into planted aquarium world. The plants I get from an LFS doesn't look pretty good (leggy stems, bad leaf etc) but that's all I can get. What worries me is the depth of the soil in the tank. I've read that the recommended soil thickness is about 1 inch but not thicker as it could cause the soil to become anaerobic but how about less? Are there any negative effects in doing so? I use about 2 cm of soil topped with just enough silica sand because of some miscalculation when ordering the potting soil online.

2 cm of soil is enough. About the same amount of fine gravel on top is also enough. "Sand" usually means some very fine particles, which isn't as good as fine gravel, but yours looks about the right size particles.

If it was a large 55 gal tank for Amazon swordplants, it might be a little skimpy and there wouldn't be enough room for the roots. But for a small tank like this and the small plants you have, I think it's just perfect.

Very nice!

Thank you very much Ms. Walstad! It's very reassuring. I've bought your book off Amazon Kindle (the hard print is not available here in Indonesia). To be honest it's very enlightening and intriguing!
