Default Filter lateral separation

OK...so my wife has agreed to let me set up the 55g that I recently acquired from a SCAPE member who had to move but couldn't take his tanks. The problem comes from the filter originally on the tank was a Penguin 350 hanging off the back. I really prefer cannisters and will buy an Eheim of some sort: Pro II, ecco or classic. Any recommendations? I've got a pro thermofilter on the 50g that I'm really happy with.

Anyway, in addition to deciding which filter to go with, I have a location problem. This tank is going on top of a book shelf. Because of that, I'd like to house the filter under the existing 50g tank. Vertical head won't change, but I'd like to run inflow and outflow at opposite ends of the tank. This means at least 8 feet of lateral run with most likely the suction side of the pump.

Think I can get away with this?

Thanks...
