Default UG Filter, external, or both?

I am new here, so please bear with me. I have a 29h tank that I am going to setup. As I do my research, I see controversing posts on the effectiveness of an undergravel filter. Could I get by with JUST a UG filter? Do I NEED a powerhead? Should I add an external filter?
Thank you for your input!

There are lots of options for filtration. I have a 29 gallon tank, and I just use a Maxijet 600, with a sponge filter on it, for filtration, water circulation and as a means of introducing CO2. It works very well at all three jobs.

Welcome to the Forum

I'm sure during your searching you found that UGF aren't a very good combination for plants. The roots get tangled in the grills. Here's a post to describe why exactly.

You can use a powerhead with a sponge as hop suggested, or you can purchase a canister filter like the Eheim 2213. HOB will be okay if you keep the water level high too. But I recommend getting the Eheim canister filter for a filtration device.
