Since only admins can post in that forum (..or so it says when I try and reply)....

I think an online chat function would e great.....BUT...I thinik we should be one of the first forums to use it EFFECTIVELY.

...ie, have SCHEDULED topics or live interviews etc from time to time.
That would be AWESOME!!

Of course, we could save the text from live interviews and repost for those that missed it

Hi,

You should have been able to reply to the poll. I'll check it out.

You raise a great point though. That's how we used to do it on Compuserve's FISHNET many years ago.

I agree with Gomer. Scheduled interviews or topics would be a must for the chat function to be used effectively -- at least one per month. Afterwards, people can stick around and ask questions that weren't in the interview for a while, chat with each other, etc.

After its done, the interview should be posted and, if it is good enough, turned into an article.

I'm all for it if it can be done this way or in some other creative way that will attract people and encourage them to use it,

Carlos

I also agree. It could be a great new aspect for the forum.

If we go with a chat function, I will try to do the interviews for future aquascapers of the month live on the chat function!

I rather that interviews are done via e-mails. That way, the interviewee can have more time to articulate a thoughtful response, as opposed to the pressure of time in real time chat. Whatever is missing can be further investigated when the interviewer post the response, like what has been done with Oliver's thread. Maybe before the interview is being conducted, the interviewee can be announced and any questions that we have can be e-mailed to the interviewer, which s/he can then forward to the interviewee.

Interviews via a chat room with lots of folks chatting at the same time would be very hard to follow. I would hardly consider it organized chaos. Plus, it's extra work for whoever has to extract relevant information from the jumble of texts into a sensible article. Agreeing to a time for the interview is also a hassle. Seems like a lot of hassle IMO.

I just don't see what the Chat room can accomplish that cannot be done through the forum. Anyway, I am one of the people that voted NO. Figure I'd speak up.

You make some good points. Thanks.

IME, the chat session will happen only rarely as the interviewee must:

a) be online at a set time for an extended timeframe;
b) usually have prepared statements as no one likes to be interviewed without knowing what at least some of what will be asked; and
c) comfortable doing it.

Therefore, I assume many of the interviews Carlos will do may have to be posted as he's done before.

However, I would envision a chat session proceding in the following manner:

1) a prepared set of questions is sent to the interviewee so that he can prepare responses.

2) the session is moderated by a moderator who will submit the questions to the interviewee and.

3) The system will not allow anyone to post except for the interviewer and interviewee until the Q&A.

4) the interviewee would cut and paste his/her response to the questions provided.

5) Once the Q&A begins, the rules will require folks to expressly raise their hands in order to post a question. You wourk off of this system until all questions have been posed or until time runs out.

6) Moderator has the power to kick anyone who misbehaves off, the system has a "bad word" filter automatically, people that are blocked won't be allowed back into the chat.

7) The moderator or me would take the resulting txt log file and edit it by removing any mistakes, double posts, etc. and then post it to the articles section with a notice in the forum.

8 The interviewee could commit to monitor the forum/article for the next week or two in order to handle follow up questions.

Hopefully, if we don't scare them off, the interviewee would become a member and we can continue to ask them questions.

What do you think?
