While you're saving up for another coralife light, you CAN improve the output on the existing hood. It looks like an "economy" hood from All-Glass, right? one of those one-piece molded plastic jobs. The perforated cut-out areas annoy me. Anyhow, those sockets are rated for 15 watts, so 14 watt CF bulbs are good. Also, even though they have those cheesy aluminum reflectors, line the back with heavy duty aluminum foil. Take off the plastic "bulb protectors" and the aluminium reflector assembly. Before re-installing the "reflector" and bulb setup, line it with heavy duty aluminum foil. I use electrical tape, rolled into an "O" to make it double-sided. Then, push holes through the foil where the molded ventilation holes are, to allow heat to escape from the hood.
An article on The Krib mentioned that light output intensity could be significanty (SIGNIFICANTLY!)improved by lining with foil. Its my kind of solution - effective, AND cheap!
