Default Hello from Federal Way Washington!

Hello from Federal Way Washington! My name is Charles and I live about 15 miles south of Seattle. I am originally from Sioux City Iowa; then moved around the country including Charleston South Carolina, Colorado Springs Colorado, and Sacramento California—before arriving in Washington State.

I think I have had a few aquariums going wherever I have lived for the last 25 years or so, but never ventured into the planted tank realm—not seriously anyway. Part of the reason for that is that fact that I am a lifelong Cichlid enthusiast—by that I mean the big South American kind. It’s always been Jack Dempsy’s, Firemouths, Managuense and the like. Can you imagine what a full grown Managuense would do to a planted tank? I had one such fish for 15 years and the aquarium it was in looked like the surface of the moon. Nothing less than a large rock could survive or remain in place. As much as I like those fish I always felt something was missing and when that grand old fish passed on I jumped into the planted tank arena.

I spent some time reading stuff from many sources and started putting some of it into action—and that’s when I found out that I am a beginner and not intermediate like I thought! I’ve been at it for about 3 months now and am starting to make some headway and yet there is much to learn. I feel fortunate to have found this board and the wealth of information and experience contained within. I look forward to learning and contributing in future discussions!

Charles

Welcome to APC Charles!

I'm also a Cichlid enthusiast, but I lean more to SA's and Mbuna's.

Default Hello from Mass

Mick here and as so many always wanted some sort of planted tank. This seems the place to maybe get that happening..I follwed a link and ended up here, gee what a surprise. I just joined and will probably end up reading and reading and reading...Dont you just love it so much info so little time. I guess first of all I do realize that the lighting is right up there on the list of neeed items and a certain amount for certain plants. I have had fish tanks for years. I have tried, without very much investigating, a plant here and there to no real avail. I would really like so feedback on how people transform the hoods that come on a tank to being the hood they need with the correct amount of light? I have heard thee are kits but thats all I know about them. I would really like to get my 10, 20L, and 30 planted but want to start out right... I do mostly fancy guppies so I am not to worried about the plants I do get being eaten as I hear happens. I do have java moss in a tank and I hear its a low light plant and is going ok just with the 10 gallon hood and original light. Well thats enough for now and thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. Hmmm getting that Ïts time to do the tanks over feeling" lol Mick
