Default Mega-Fast Growth Planted Nano Tank

Hey!

I write for TheAquariumGuide, and I've been tasked with building a Nano Tank with the fastest plant growth possible. Luckily, this is a company project, so money isn't an issue! Our goal is to capture the time-lapsed growth of a tank from planting until maturity. We'll be using a Canon Rebel T2i attached to an intervalometer sitting on a desk next to the tank, and—after doing some testing—we've got it so you can actually see the plants growing! (and also any algae that we're terrible at managing!)

I was hoping to have a discussion with everyone about the specific equipment that we can use for this. EHEIM supplied us with a Classic 250, and we're speaking with a few places about a Nano Tank. (We'll also be reviewing the tank setup, as well.)

Here's what we're currently looking at, mostly from an Amazon Retailer that we've had good results with:
  1. EHEIM Classic 250 Filter (donated)
  2. Various Brands of a Nano Tank (5 Gallons or less, likely donated)
  3. CaribSea Eco-Complete Substrate (black)
  4. Finnex Planted+ LED Light (and Moonlights) - 12"
  5. GLA Atomic Nano CO2 Kit (v2)
  6. Dwarf Hairgrass
  7. Java Fern

Anybody have any points they'd like to give us about this stuff, particularly about the ferts? That's one of the few areas where I'm hazy about the specifics.

Java fern and Dhg are not fast growing plants.

Use EI dosing for ferts and crank up co2 very high for fast growth (don't put livestock in)

Yeah, dhg takes forever to get started, you may want to check out some micranthenum umbrosum or dwarf baby tears. The Monte Carlo grows quite quickly in my 3 gal nano, and it isn't even CO2 supplemented. As for ferts I recommend and always will recommend the Seachem line especially if price isn't an issue, their dosing guide is easy to follow and use, however, for price dry ferts are generally preferable although if this is a relatively short project you may find yourself with a fairly large amount of leftovers. Also be wary of EI dosing especially on a nano tank as it will probably lead to a green box until your plants are established and can cope with the excess nutrients, although I guess if you stay on top of water changes that won't be too much of an issue either.

Fastest growth, ADA soil for max nutrients through their roots, 10x EI to be sure everything is in the water as well. No livestock and very high CO2.

I tried this within the limits of livestock and made Ceratophyllum demersum grow 10 cm (4 inch) a day! Also Glossostigma and Riccia are good candidates if you want max growth.

Max light, light is like the acceleration pedal of growth, CO2 will be limited first, so make sure that is as high as possible. You probably need another CO2 kit, or need to replace the cartridge daily.

PS. Contact Tom Barr, he did this experiment 30 years ago, which led to EI...

Yeah a great writing of fast growing plants in tanks, very beautifully explained with lot of inspiration and encouragement of using various kinds of materials to get fast growth. Highly appreciable effort.
