Killies would work. What about Elassoma such as E. evergladei? I keep a few in a planted(defined by having plants in it) tank.

you can do with many species of Boraras.
e.g. Boraras maculata, Boraras brigittae, Boraras merah, Boraras urophthalmoides.

DO a google pic search if you need to see pictures of what tehy look like.

Licorice gouramis are great too..

I have had my Corydorus habrosus in a 6 gallon. And the emerald eyed rasbora is my favorite pick for very small fish. I think you have to really restrict the number and variety of species in a small tank, not just for the obvious reason of bioload, but also from an aesthetic point of view. Too much in a small space takes it from being restful to frenetic--not usually what you'd want to achieve with a small tank...
