If i recall correctly, Felipe Olivera (the aquascaper who was referred to in the original post) used several small branches that were put together to make the tree trunk.....
From what I've gathered, the driftwood you need to look for is one that will look like a tree trunk when viewed in the tank - it can be one piece of wood (apparently more difficult to find to get the right look) or several pieces placed together to get the trunk with the branching pattern near the top. The 'leafy' portion of the tree is created by patient trimming of the moss as it grows out.
Java moss can be used, but may not get the 'fullness' you would look for in that particular setting....Taiwan and Peacock mosses seem to have the best properties and look to get a 'tree' effect.
