Default Making a tree?

Hey, can somebody give me an idea of how to make a "tree?"
I really love how they created this look:

Is that Riccia growing as "leaves?"

I found a thread where it shows how he created the tree and scape: https://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/f...iro-manso.html

How the tree ends up depends on the branch structure you start with and how you trim the moss. It looks like Taiwan moss was used for both trees.

How big of a tank are you looking to "make" the tree in? I have some wood in the garage that would probably look pretty good in a 5.5 gallon. I pick it up out in the desert so I'm not sure what type it is exactly but it looks really nice in water. It's a lighter color from being bleached in the sun.

I used a bunch of it my turtle tank.

Let me know if you want to try it out and it's yours, just pay for the shipping. I might have enough Tiawan moss to get you started on it too.

Thanks for the offer StevenLeeds I am thinking about making a miniature bonsai looking one in my 2.5gal. Do you think the tank would be too small? I am thinking the 2.5 because I figure it would be easier to find a suitable light fixture for it than for my 10gal.
I will try to bring all the equipment together and once about set I will pm you about the wood.

Wicca27 would you mind showing us how your java fern tree looks like. I would love to look at another inspirational photo.

I've always wanted to make a tree after I saw the picture around 6 months ago. Trust me the only hard part about making one is finding a piece of dw that looks like a tree. Besides that it's just attaching and trimming whatever plant you use, which isn't hard.

Okay, I'm working on my 2.5's tonight. When I tear the next one down I will play around the stuff I have to see if anything looks like it will work.

I have some smaller pieces that should fit just fine in a 2.5 and give you what your looking for.

For that size of tank I can throw in some rock that'll go nice with the wood if you're sort of thinking about a tree on a hill type setup. It's would be perfect for making a wooded mountain rock cliff type thingy....

Something else you might want to consider is how you anchor the tree. The first time I tried it I anchored it in too permanent and trimming moss in place on a tree in a small tank makes a mess. Second time I tried it I siliconed a plastic tube to the tank bottom and hid it in the hill of substrate. Being able to lift it out and trim it was invaluable to avoid having the trimmings all over the tank. It's hard to get all those small pieces out.

Nothing I have right now will work in 2.5 gallon. The next time I go out hiking with the kids I'll keep my out for some.
