To make it easier I did the math. This is estimated from a different post which claimed a 50#bag of Soilmaster had ~1800cubic inches:

20x10(10 gallon aquarium)-200inches cubed per inch of substrate, or 5.5
#p/inch of substrate
24x12(15 gallon aquarium, 20 gallon) you get the idea-4.3# p/inch of
substrate
30x12(20 long, 29 gallon)- 10# p/inch of substrate
36x12(30 gallon)- 12.5# p/inch of substrate
36x18(50 gallon, 58 gallon)- 18.5# p/inch of substrate
48x18(90 gallon, 75 gallon)- 25# p/ inch of substrate
48x24(???)-33# p/inch of substrate

Hope it helps!

Hey Dennis,

OK, my ears are perked up....... but what exactly is "Soilmaster"???

What's the grainsize?

Is it nutritive, or inert?

I'm going to re-do my 30 REAL soon, might want to go a notch or two closer to the "high tech" end of things, and this might be perfect timing.

Thanks!
-Jane

PS, if it seemed like a good fit, and depending on price, I'd go for 2 x 50lb bags to have it on hand.

I have not seen the stuff yet but according to Bryce who picked it up, color is slightly lighter than Eco, the grain size is similar to Eco (what we used at Ned's) and smaller that Flourite. My impression for others is the size, color and weight is similar to ADA stuff but without any nutrients.

MatPat has some photos up in the SWOPE forum. A search for Soilmaster will return lots of info.

Price is ~16 a bag I think. Will you be coming to the NEC? Join us over on the NEAPS email list, we have been discussing it a bit there

Dennis

No, NEC is not a possibility THIS year, but perhaps in the future.

OK, I'll do a search, and go see the NE APS list.

Thanks!

Yep, I now have about 500 lbs of the stuff sitting in my garage. I'd be happy to get some to anyone that would like it at our next meeting. If you'd like it sooner, send me a PM.

I'm thinking of using some in a 20H setup for the cheap tank contest here at APC. It will also be good to get some experience with planting in it. If I do, I'll be sure to post some photos & thoughts about what it's like to work with.

Cool! I'm in! It is the "Soilmaster Select", the smaller, more uniform granule size, right?

I can't go to the NEC, but when is the next meeting after that? Bryce, are you still going to be around then? Or should I arrange to come get it sooner..... perhaps you'd like it OUT of your garage before beginning the fun & exciting task of packing up the household?

I'll take 3 bags. If you've got too much in your garage, I could take a fourth.

Thanks!
