Default Thinking about Jaguar Cichlid

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and in aquarium niche in general. I bought my first aquarium 2 years ago. It wasn't a big one, but I had a lot of fun with. Couple days ago I bought 40 gallon new aquarium and I'm thinking that I am enough mature to have Jaguar Cichlid in it. But it is my first big fish and I am a little bit afraid to do this.. So what are your tips for me? Maybe this fish is not for begginers? Maybe someone of you have this fish? What are your thoughts? For those who do not know anything about this fish I found an informative article about Jaguar Cichlid care etc. Thank you for your suggestions.

Welcome to APC!

Jaguar cichlids grow very large, and will quickly need a much larger tank than a 40g. Even a 75 is probably too small for optimum health. Large carnivorous fish need excellent filtration. This species will dig a lot, and will "arrange" the tank to suit itself.

So unless you can upgrade to a 100g, this probably isn't the best fish for you. There are lots of smaller cichlids that would do very well in your 40. A very pretty species that is great for beginners is the kribensis, Pelvicachromis pulcher. Here is a good article: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species...romis-pulcher/

Welcome to APC!

A 40 gallon tank isn't nearly large enough for a fish that can grow to 14 inches long! There are a lot of cichlids that are small enough for that tank, and they would be much happier in it than a really large fish.

Our emphasis here is on growing aquatic plants, and having a beautiful layout of growing plants, rocks and "driftwood". Few of us seek to keep fish over 4 inches long.
