Default Cheap tank ideas

I am thinking about entering the cheap tank contest (not because I have a snowballs chance, but I think I may learn alot) so I would like a few opinions about my possible setup. I have a 15 gallon high tank with an eclipse type hood that I dug out of my neighbors trash (perfectly good) and was looking at the 32 Sunpaq retrofit. I have an extra bag of Tahitian moon sand and would like to forego any CO2 by dosing with excel. I would also like to use easy-to-grow, low-maint. plants. I think about 2wpg would be good esp. w/o CO2, but I could use a 10 gal and be at around 3wpg. Anyways, like I said I'm not going to give anyone a run for their money but it gives me an excuse to get my wife let me set up another tank. I found tons of info on the forums, but I also enjoy hearing real personal feedback. Thanks alot for any help. Sorry for the super long post, but maybe the info can help a few other newbs too.

I think your idea with the 15 gallon tank is good. Put some hardscape in there as well apart from the plants, maybe some driftwood or different size rocks.

Cheers,
Pedro

Local landscape place for rocks- I got a 5 gallon bucket full for a buck
Shultz Aquatic Soil also called profile/turface for substrate.

I've had success with chain sword, java moss, common crypts, rotala rotundifolia, java fern, hygrophila...

Just try to set up a simple layout with whatever you can get for hardscape and a few plants you know you can grow well. I have one 10 gallon tank I have tried a few layouts in for the practice.

Sounds great, nano! A 2 wpg Excel tank should be a fairly easy to maintain tank, and you shouldn't have many algae issues due to the lower light if all else is well. And, let's face it, it doesn't get much cheaper than the neighbor's trash.
