Default What Soil do you Recomend?

I have been looking at the ADA soil program. An would like to know your thoughts. As well I have a standard 55 gal tank that measures 13"x48"x24" About how much soil would I need for this tank? And what would you recomend.

Depends on what you wish to accomplish and how deep your pockets are.

Try running some searches on Soilmaster Select, Aquasoil, Eco Complete, Flourite, etc...

Also check out the El Natural forum a few clicks down from this one.

If you like to experiment, to try to nudge the frontiers of this hobby a little bit, you can try things like Soilmaster, or Zeolite Sand, or some other substrate-like material sold for uses other than aquariums. Or, you can go really inexpensive and use ordinary quartz sand, perhaps with garden soil mixed into the bottom half of the substrate thickness. I can't remember anyone discovering that a substrate material just wont work - there are just so many different materials that can be used to grow plants. How about cow manure under sand, for example?

The cheapest regular gravel or inert silica quartz sand 2 – 3 mm size with daily PPS-Pro fertilizing will grow any aquatic plants.
