Default Another lighting question

I was browsing around the forums about various lighting options. I have a common 55 gallon tank and right now I have four regular 40 watt daylight tubes over it. In the near future, I'd like to convert to something a little more aesthetically pleasing. I am really considering ordering an AH supply 2x55 watt kit or a T5 HO 2X54 watt hood. Both are similar in price. From what I have read, those will both produce more than enough light for my tank, correct? I personally think a 4 x 54watt T5 HO is overkill but I do not have any experience using those types of lights so I cannot say for sure. Anybody have any ideas?

Hey Erik. first off welcome to apc. If they give even coverage of the tank, I would opt for either the AHS 2x55 or the T5 2x54. That will give you a little over 2wpg on that tank and should grow most plants for you. I wouldn't recommend using the 4x54, especially as a starting point. Once your tank is mature, and you gain experience, if you want more lighting, then go to the 4x54.

Thanks Bert. One more quick question...So the ~3 watts per gallon (in normal output fluorescents) I have now is comparable to the two setups I described?

It depends on the reflectors/fixture you're using. If it were me, I'd opt for the ahs 2x55 with their reflectors over the 4 x40 tubes, again assuming even coverage.
