LFS Long Beach: All About Fish
I went out to All About Fish in Long Beach and talked to Edward he is #2 in the operation. The place was really good I thought it was better than Ocean Blue in Orange. This could be another potential meeting spot for the people closer to LA for some. He was willing to try and set something up. Again I was really impressed with the place. They had a planted display tank as their main tank. Their main focus was freshwater specialty into the plecos.

thanks for whoever posted about this place.

I just went there today. I mentioned I had a planted tank and he told me about a planted aquarium club interested in meeting there. I assume he is very interested because he is already telling people about it.

I am interested in apistos and he mentioned that he was going to get a few different types of cacs in.

I also bought some tiger shrimp from him I will keep you guys informed on whether they survive.

He had some glosso and some dwarf hair grass and some microsword just name a few that I was interested in but didnt buy.

I would really like this to be our meeting place since its so close to me and the guy told me he was interested in planted aquariums.

Could be a good candidate.

turbomkt 03-26-2006 09:10 PM

The nice thing is we don't (shouldn't) have to focus on one store. We seem to be getting a good mix of locations ( and once more people admit where they live to at least the zip code level we can probably try for a once every 3 months big meeting and localized meetings monthly.

Just a thought.

jeff63851 03-26-2006 09:34 PM

hey slickwillislim, do you still remember how much the glosso cost? I think I might check out the store tomorrow. I don't know, but shouldn't psidriven and I be in the Los Angeles County region, and not the San Diego Region?

turbomkt 03-27-2006 07:03 AM

That's either a result of when you signed up it didn't take your location right and gave the default, or their database is screwy. I've fixed it, though.

John P. 03-27-2006 07:45 AM

i have some glosso if you need some.

They only had one pot left and i dont know the price. It was all maybe 2 inches or so tall since it was shaded but it didnt have any algae that I could see. They get new plants late on wednesdays. Sorry I cant be more help I was just browsing and happened to notice it.

Abe Froman 03-27-2006 10:15 PM

The actual owner of the store is Kirt and he is really into planted tanks. I was in today to check out the monday fish shipment (some nice apistos and plecos that will likelly be gone quick) and he mentioned that one of the staff had talked to some folks about possibly meeting there. He didn't have more info than that at the time. I have since sent him an email to let him know about SCAPE and I am sure he wouldn't have a problem with meeting there.

That seems pretty reasonable. You could even rotate the big meetings between areas every 3 months so have one in SD then 3 months later OC, then 3 months later LA, etc... I wouldn't mind helping to organize a meeting here in LBC or even help organize an LA County or Southbay group for SCAPE if there is interest.

turbomkt 03-28-2006 05:27 AM

Thanks, Abe! Feel free to point him to the forum here so he can see the interest level.

guppy 03-28-2006 07:07 AM

hahah I already did that.

TetraFreak 03-28-2006 07:24 AM

If the owner of the LFS that is a plant fan like the rest of us is willing, perhaps that location would be great to setup a DIY CO2 "how to" session. I'm sure if they had the supplies on-hand at a low cost, then the general public might want to check it out as well.

Abe Froman 03-28-2006 08:16 AM

That would be simple enough. Would also be cool to have people bring in samples of DIY diffusers/reactors.

Another topic of interest is retrofitting eclipse hoods. He just did a retrofit of an eclipse 3 in the store so a demo of that might be of interest to those who haven't already gone the AH route.

frugalfish 03-28-2006 08:38 AM

Glad to hear this store may be interested. I'm planning on checking this place out this week.

guppy 03-29-2006 08:35 PM

I didnt know they have this customer loyalty program where you get a little card bring it everytime and you get 5% back of your original purchase and it works like cash.

slickwillislim 03-30-2006 03:08 PM

Yeah he gave me one of those cards last time. I only spent like ten bucks to on some tiger shrimp. Nice guy. I have 50 cents whooopeee.

chromeburn 04-04-2006 09:01 AM

FWIW, i stopped by there to pick up some basic supplies (much prefer to shop at locals store than.. oh.. PETCO-LAND).
The guy there was great (i forgot to get his name), answered all my silly questions, didn't mind that my girlie and I were basically just wandering around for 20 minutes staring at fish and plants, offered to test my water, and gave me some plant suggestions... basically did EVERYTHING that I would ever expect an LFS to do.
Color me impressed and I'll be back often.

Gomer 04-04-2006 09:46 AM

I guess I am going to have to make a stop on by there sometime :)

cwlodarczyk 04-04-2006 11:23 AM

Ok, my turn... I stopped in there last Sunday. Great store. Lots of plants, though not much for supplies. Talked with Kirt for a while - really nice guy.

I picked up an ozelot sword, a nice piece of driftwood, and a few false rosy tetras while I was there. This place will definately be on my list of "good" stores to visit even though they're not particularly close to home for me.

I also emailed Kirt a link to this board and SCAPE - I didn't recieve a reply email from him but we'll have to see if he turned up here.

guppy 05-07-2006 06:50 PM

Went there yesterday saturday they had Crystal red shrimp in along with bee shrimp. Heads up here also some really cool things that I haven't seen before. A lot of Apistogramma spieces along with some other fish that aren't very common in the hobby.

turbomkt 05-07-2006 07:05 PM

What were the quality/prices on the CRS and bees?

guppy 05-07-2006 08:42 PM

$5 for crystal shrimp I think. The Crystal shrimp where about a B-C grade like the ones on this The Bee shrimp lookd pretty good I didnt pay that much attention to the shrimp.

Color Me Blue 05-08-2006 02:23 PM

I'm going to be up in Long Beach tomorrow and I plan on stopping by that fish store. Hope the shrimp are still available. I've been looking for bees.

jeff63851 05-08-2006 10:02 PM

:o $5 for a B-C grade CRS?? Is that a good deal?

frugalfish 05-09-2006 08:13 AM

Well I am a big fan of this store and I will be stopping in weekly to check out what's new. Kirt is a great guy, very friendly, and helpful. I really love the fact that he carries fish that you just don't see in other stores, such as Gooboo gudgeons, wild livebearers, Apistogrammas, just to name a few. He's also willing to look for something if he doesn't have it and has some great sources at hand to do so. If you are in the area or even if you are not you owe it to yourself to pay a visit.

I picked some shrimp and fish pellets up yesterday. As for shrimp he had in there were amanos, rednose, crystal reds (C grade for those that are so concerned over such a thing), cherries, might have been some bees, another shrimp I've never seen before that I pointed out to Kirt, seems they were mixed in with the amanos and looked like a Neocaridina sp., rainbows, and bamboo shrimp.

As a reminder he gets new stuff in on either Mondays or Wednesdays.

Color Me Blue 05-10-2006 01:34 AM

I was in his store earlier yesterday (tuesday) and found it wonderful! I bought some of those C grade CRS (they look fine to me and I took some pics to show, once I dl them) and 2 rednosed shrimps. These shrimp went for $5.99 each. Great customer service! I was also surprised to see the variety of those atypical LFS fish. You can tell they care for their critters. I was disappointed to find out that "someone" (I was told a fellow member of Scape and reg. customer) had bought all the bees! I looking forward to buying some! -hands on hips/tapping foot- LOL I'll just have to try next time...even though it's about a 2 hour drive for me to get there.

I also recommend this LFS, even if it is quite a drive. I was lucky enough to be in the neighborhood and glad I took the opportunity to visit. :)

Here are 2 pics of the CRS (I got 6 of them) and Rednosed Shrimps I bought on Tuesday. (I hope this first time posting pics here) BTW, they are doing great! I love the addition to my tank! :)

Color Me Blue 05-11-2006 12:16 AM

Yea!! It worked! LOL They aren't the greatest quality pictures, but you get the ideal of what they look like.

turbomkt 05-11-2006 03:49 PM

Congrats on the new shrimp!

Color Me Blue 05-11-2006 05:07 PM

Thanks Mike! :) When I get the chance I want to check out AW to see what kind of inverts they carry. I really want to get my hands on some bees. It's a shame that it's so difficult to find LFS locally who carry the variety of inverts we crave to own.

Color Me Blue 05-14-2006 06:35 PM

Yeah!! One of my CRS is carrying eggs! I'm gonna have lil CRS running around in my tank soon. I definitely got lucky with this purchase! :)

slickwillislim 06-02-2006 03:39 PM

I was just there yesterday and noticed they had a bunch of those red sea paintball regulators. They even had red sea tanks for them. I dont remember the price but if your interested in seeing it they have it. I also asked Kirt if he had any ludwigia cuba or pantanal. He didnt have any but he said he could order them. I bought some flourish since I ran out and it was quite a bit cheapre than Strictly fish. 12.99 vs 15.99. Thats for excel. Strictly fish didnt even cary regular flourish or any micro nutrient fertilizer. They also had quite a few types of tetras and many species of rasboros. Dont remember the species but a one or two small ones. The main plant tank looked a little hazy I hope they can fix that it made looking at the plants in the back a little annoying. Just thought I would give a update incase anyone was looking for that regulator locally.

Gomer 06-02-2006 04:11 PM

I jsut called them. CO2 cylinder is 59.99 and the pro regulator kit thing is 159.99
