EHEIM 2217's hooked directly to RR drains

I have a 180 reef ready tank, that I want to setup has a planted tank. I was thinking of hooking up a EHEIM 2217 to each of my durso drains and return it to the RR returns. Will this work? Has anyone done this? I posted this in the lrg tank forum also. Thanks Larry

Here is a picture off of the AGA site to show my drains.

I am going to figure this out yet! I am thinking to just cut the drain pipe to about 3" tall. I would think then air can't get in pumps. What do you think?

It will be fine, don't even use a pipe on the inlet side, just a strainer on the bulkhead. You will need to make sure evaporation doesn't make the level in the overflow go too low that the inlet starts sucking in air. Otherwise should be ok.

speakerguy thanks for your reply. The strainer idea is a good idea.

I'd put a sponge filter at the inlet.

Another good idea! A prefilter before the canister.

All the above is correct i have a 110g tank that came drill with bulk heads and no cover for the over flow box. I use a 5inch clear pvc {substriat is 3-4inchs} with a clear strainer, and my return was a clear pvc just under the water line, My filter is a 2080 Eheim filter that i hook up under the tank with ball valve, I would change is the Durso's pipe intake an add a 5inch pvc with strianer to keep any gravel from getting suck into the strainer you can use a spong to keep the big stuff out of the filter
