Re: My 68 litre (18 gallon) Aquarium

Cost:

Aquarium: $72.00.
Lighting: I bought the lighting for this tank so long ago that I can't remember the price, but the reflector and tubes would be worth about $50.00.
Substrate: gravel, worth approximately $10.00, and soil from my garden.
Plants: worth approximately $60.00 (this is only a rough estimation, as most of them were cuttings from my other tanks and ponds).
Animals: small invertebrates which came free on the plants, and a male Western Pygmy Perch (Edelia vittata) which cost $7.00 when I bought him in 1999.

Total: approximately $199.00 Australian Dollars.

Here is some information about the tank, and a list of the plant species:

Set up date: 15th February 2005
Tank dimensions: 60cm x 30cm x 38cm (24" x 12" x 15").
Lighting: two 20 watt Cool White fluorescents and sunlight.
Filtration/water movement: none.
CO2 injection: none.
Fertilisers: none.
Substrate: 3.75cm (1½ inches) of topsoil with 2.5cm (one inch) of 3mm gravel over the top.
Animals: one seven-year-old male Western Pygmy Perch (Edelia vittata), Common Pond Snails (two different varieties), very small, see-through Ramshorn Snails, large red Ramshorn Snails, ostracods, blackworms, Tubifex worms, unidentified feather worms, flatworms, Moina, Cyclops, Hydra, and tiny white free-swimming worms.
Plants at the time of photographing: Chara sp., Crassula helmsii, Didiplis diandra, Egeria sp., Eleocharis acicularis, Eleocharis sp., Hydrocotyle sp., Hygrophila sp. “Narrow Leaf”, Landoltia punctata, Lilaeopsis polyantha, Ludwigia arcuata, Ludwigia repens, Marsilea drummondii, Myriophyllum aquaticum , Myriophyllum simulans, Najas sp., Rotala rotundifolia, Vallisneria spiralis, Java Moss.

This is one of the coolest tanks I've seen (the forest!) but I'd kill for a better shot of it. This doesn't do it justice.

Thanks for the compliment! I wish I could take better photos. I'm learning though. If you thought this photo was bad, you should see the earlier photos of this tank!

If anyone is interested, now that the merger is complete, there is a thread about this tank in "El Natural" which has more details about its setup, progress etc. (http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/el-natural/21734-wet-thumb-forum-my-68-litre.html?highlight=Newest+Low-tech+Aquarium).
