Pros:
Easy to read color chart
Cons:
Small print size on instruction sheet, a bit pricey
The attribute of this test kit is similar to that of their NO3 test kit reviewed earlier. The color charts are in graduated shades of blue from powder blue to sky blue. It\'s very easy to interprolate between shades and you can dilute the sample with RO/DI water in ratios of 1:1 and 1:4. The undiluted scale measures from 0.1 mg/l to 2.0 mg/l and the 1:4 ratio scale measures from 0.5 mg/l to 10.0 mg/l. Some may think that these are \"over-the top\" values but they are realistic and usuable if you are running a high tech tank and if you frequently dose Phosphate.
I believe that the kit is fairly accurate because as always I calibrate the kit every time I obtain a new box, primarily with samples of known PO4 values. As with their other tests the vial should be held just slightly off the paper to allow the light to reflect back up into the sample in order to avoid a perceived color shift.
As always, Sera provides instructions in 20 languages and explains what the nominal values should be. The result is the the font size of the text pushes the limit of human vision.
I pay €13 locally ($1 which works out to €0.22 ($0.30 cents) per test which is a bit steep if you test a lot. The test procedures and color chart use are identical for salt water as well as fresh.
The kit contents include two liquid reagents and and dry white powder and small plastic scoop. Scooping extra powder does not affect the readings but merely wastes reagent.
Sera does not explain the science of their reagents so it is impossible to determine what factors can cause corruption of the readings.
Cheers,
