Thanks Tex Gal I had a similar setup awhile back and only used java moss. The light sand, dark rock and the deep green of the moss really looked pretty good for a low tech setup.

I'm torn on this one. I've had some great suggestions on another forum to use some tall, dark crypts and hygro.

I have a boat load of java moss and some others to play with. I'm leaning towards using that and making it a shrimp and oto tank. If not snowball shrimp then some julii cats with the otos.

It looks like a good base for moss tank.
My suggestion is to add some Microsorum Needle Leaf or Bolbitis heudelotii to rear corners of the tank.
I like your idea. I had considered watersprite for the corners. I like the African Water Fern and I have a 2.5 gallon that's over grown with Needle Leaf Java.

Do you know of a source for the Bolbitis heudelotii ?

Love the rocks. I wish I could find rocks liek that around my area (ontario canada)
Shipping USPS Flat Rate to Canada = $24.00 for packages maximum of 20lbs which is roughly what is pictured in that 10 gallon. $20.00 for the rock and I'll put together a package for you.

It doesn't appear to be a restricted item so it should clear customs without any issue.

Let me know if you are interested.

I moved the tank out of the garage yesterday and up into my room. The BBA I got with the ferns I bought has almost entirely cleared up and it has finished cycling. I've started placing the ferns but am not quite finished. Some need to be tied down

I'm still looking for a few more plants but progress on it has been good so far. Sorry about the broken links at the top I'll try to fix those and get some updated pictures tonight.

What happened to your pxs? Can you post some now?
I accidently deleted the photos from photobucket. I couldn't seem to edit the original post to delete the links.

I'm going to take some pictures of the tank today. I have all the short ferns in place more or less. There are some places I'm not too happy with but It's a work in progress. At least I won the algae battle.

I'm looking for some taller java fern to fill in part of the background.

Thanks for asking and if you can let me edit the post that would be appreciated.

You need the java fern v needle leaf. Shame you aren't near me for I have some I could spare.

Your java fern look like they need some flourish excel or hydro peroxide and Calcium sulfide.

Are you in Canada? Where are you in Canada?

These 2 are in Canada:
Rusalka Toronto, ON, Canada
Sunstar Burlington, ON, Canada
I am actually in Las Vegas. Thank you for the offer though.

The ferns were a lot worse off a few weeks ago. Covered in algae. They've been been on a weekly fert routine for only a few weeks now. Hopefully in a few more weeks they'll start looking a little better.

I have a ten gallon with nothing but java fern, but mine has wood instead of rocks. Planning on adding other plants after I'm done cultivating a good amount.

I like your set up. Other than the betta and the otos, do you plan on putting anything else in it?
Thanks. I'll be moving the betta out in a couple of weeks and adding some small cory's and that will probably be all I add.

Looks great! It'll really look nice when it gets a little height.

The Java sp 'wedelov' in the back right will not grow tall. It just kinda stays short. You might want to move that forward some. (Looks like they might use a little iron as they are quite pale.)
Everything is beginning to respond to being fed and turning the green color they should be. All the algae has finally cleared up too.

The wedelov was just sort of parked back there until I could figure out which of the leaves were going to recover. It's going to be moved to the far right side of the tank towards the front.

Nothing much to update other than the addition of 6 amano shrimp. Well into a good fert routine now and the plants are becoming healthy and the algae is all but gone.

Going to give it a couple more weeks and then I'll prune out the sick leaves and properly plant the ferns.

I'm happy with the amount of light, I think it is going to be enough to keep the ferns healthy.

The ferns have completely taken over the tank. I've uprooted all of them and will be removing probably half of them.

I have 3 2.5 gallon tanks that I'm going to tear down and rescape. They're going to be setup the same as the 10 gallon as sort of a collage of tanks.

I'm going to be adding a few more varieties of plants and moss from my larger tanks that I'm tearing down.

The goal is four or five really low budget small tanks with a common theme.

I never did add the corys. I added 20 or so minami shrimp that are breeding like crazy.

The tank looks a lot different now. I'm going to take some photos this weekend.

This is the tank the otos are breeding in.
