50 gallon help?

1530 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  ferris89
I am hopefully going to start a 50 gallon tank rescape. This is at an assisted living place that my sister runs. Seeing as she has no budget for that type of thing, I was wondering if people would be willing to donate stuff. It would be tax deductible since this place is a non-profit organization...

Now after that, I need recommendations for low-maintenance plants, and a good type of schooling fish.
A design that is peaceful and inviting seeing as many of the residents don't quite have the mental capacity for anything too complex.

any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

great! let me know via PM what you can do and I will be able to get stuff going! The other fish in the tank are tetras and mollies so no aggressive fish are in there! yay!

and equipment wise, I am really only looking for plants and driftwood right now, Don't think I am going to get to fancy with CO2 yet, needs to be easy maintenance :)
What kind of lighting is on this tank? You don't want to be receiving a bunch of high light plants if there is limited lighting on the tank. Got any pics?

Just FYI, for it to be tax deductible, the person donating has to have a receipt of sorts from the organization...I think. I just know that when I donate to a 'Non-Profit" they always give me an invoice of the items and appox. value or I get a statement that says the dollar amount donated for the tax year.
I don't know the lighting yet, but will find out all the specs once i go down there.

And she is very good about the receipt thing!

I will get everything figured out and posted on here. I just need suggestions for design right now, and a list of possible donations :)
okay, I have the specs!

50 gallon
48" wide x13" deep x19" tall
It has two hood lights, each one has a 120 volt 19 watt
one aquaclear 50 filter and one aquatech 30-60 filter
Wow, that only gives you .75 WPG! You'll only be able to keep anubias and ferns and mosses alive, and growth will be little or none. On the bright side, maintenance will be a breeze! (No trimming, little or no ferts, no need for CO2.)

even though that's low, It's perfect for this application! lol I didn't want to do anything too fancy anyway, just want to make a calm environment for the residents :)
This is a very nice thing you are doing... I could send you some moss & hornwort.
thank you! that would be nice! when I get closer to actually rescaping it I will PM you and post on this board, right now I'm trying to see who is up to supporting it! I'm hoping petsmart will donate the fish!

I'm trying to do some community service every year just to know that I'm making a difference in someone's life.

They almost got rid of the aquarium because it was too much maintenance, but the residents wanted to keep it. It has shown that the tank calms agitated residents down, and it helps dementia patients stay at the table longer (while watching the fish) so they eat more and don't lose weight because they don't forget to eat. It is actually beneficial to their health!:D
thanks for moving the thread! after posting I kinda realized it was no longer aquascaping yet :)
