Hello, I am new to this forum so please if this is the wrong place for this post let me know. I am currently having an outbreak in some type of green algae that I have yet to identify. In the book ecology of the planted aquarium, Walstad mentions on page 172 adding water lettuce to the tank to help take in access nutrients filter more light, and help smother out the algae growth. Upon looking into purchasing this plant I found that it is illegal to own it in my state (FL) without a special permit. Is there another plant I may add to my 10gal freshwater tank that would achieve a similar effect? Thank you for the help!

Water lettuce is prohibited here in Texas also. I use frogbit, Limnobium laevigatum, for this purpose.

While Water Lettuce is a strong plant, almost any floating plant should work. Riccia, duckweed, frogbit, Salvinia, Water Sprite are growing strong in my plants without Water Lettuce.

You can float stem plants too. I threw some hydrocotyle umbelata, pennywort, for some shade.
