No... I would pull it off where most of the roots stay attached. Some roots will tear off, but that will not kill the plant. Depending on the length of the roots they may need to be trimmed before planting. Also when planting do not bury the rhizome completly, or it will die. Plant the rhizome at an angle where the top half is not buired in the substrate.
