The bud will produce one or more spikes with a lot of flowers, each one having both female and male parts. Not all Aponogetons can be self-fertilized, but some can. To self fertilize, brush the spike with a small paintbrush for watercolors. If self-fertilization is successful, small green fruits will develop over the next week or two. They will open up to release floating seeds which will sink after a day or two.

What does brushing them with the paint brush do? i have had many of my plants flower and never known what to do. Then the flower just falls off and then that's it.

I believe brushing them with a soft paint brush is similar to the wind moving the pollen out of flowers.
