So me and my girlfriend were walking down a little street looking for a bus stop the other day when she saw this pet store. Just my luck that it was the only pet shop in the area that sells aquatic plants as well as fish! The owner was really nice. My girlfriend had to translate back and forth between English and Spanish since he had a really weird accent and I couldn't make out much of anything he said. He is also a plant nut :D I directed him here to APC and showed him the plant finder which he immediately bookmarked and was excited about. He said the plant hobby is pretty big here in Argentina, lots of people have planted tanks in their homes. Apparently he sells a lot of plants as well :) He had power compact lighting on all his tanks.

What type of fish is this? Apparently it was caught in one of the rivers near by. The owner of the pet shop said he sells them as feeder fish for piranhas o_O

This is the shop from the outside

I was drawing him a picture of my CO2 reactor setup. I think it was a new idea to him since he sells ceramic diffusers.

He also had a ginormous cat! It was freaking huge!

And here is some random graffiti we found on a street corner that has fish in it :D

Fun stuff. Your mystery fish is some kind of poecilid livebearer, the gonopodium is a dead giveaway, but I haven't the foggiest idea which species or even genus. Not Gambusia, there are no Gambusia species with vertical barring AFAIK, but maybe a close relative.

Someone from the ALA would probably be your best shot for getting an ID... seeing as it's obviously not a species common in the U.S. hobby.

Thanks for the photos. It's pretty neat that I can recognize many all of the plant species in their tanks. It's a testament to the hobby.

BTW the prettiest thing in the shop was your darling girlfriend.

Hahaha thanks Tex :)

I was considering bringing some of the fish back, but that is quite a bit of hassle.

Interesting that nobody knows what they are at a glance. The ALA is...?

American Livebearer Association (or, if you're into books, the American Library Association LOL - but I was referring to the former). If anyone's going to be able to ID an obscure foreign livebearer, it's them. All I can do is confirm that it is, indeed, a livebearer and therefore a subject of ALA scrutiny.

Also, that long, skinny tank up on that shelf? I need it. My shrimp would love it. Someone get me one for my birthday.
