Maybe I've just got a particularly nasty male, but I don't think there's any way that a female would survive alongside him in a 5 gallon tank.

The Mahachai are more peaceful.

In terms of a planted tank, will the bettas be nasty to any shrimp? I know that cherries and some others are much smaller than the amanos. I feel like the amanos could handle themselves, mostly because they're a little bigger.

Also, are there particular betta species that are less aggressive?

I just wanted to share some of my bettas that I've been keeping. The pics are not very good, but it is the best I can do as I am shooting them as is in their breeding tanks and they hate the camera. the water is stained from leaves.

Betta livida, female

Betta foerschi, male

Betta burdigalla?, male eating a worm

All species are fairly agressive. Imbellis and brederi tend to be a little more docile, IME as well as pugnax have been known to school. Finding a betta that gets along with shrimp is hit and miss. It really depends on the particular betta (not the species). 90% of all my bettas get along with shrimp.

Just a bit of an update:

I lost an imbellis female with an unfortunate disaster in my tank, but the other is alive and healthy, and evidently spawned with the male a few days ago. He's guarding a bubblenest full of relatively developed fry. I didn't even notice :)
